How To Save Apps, Data & Games In External Memory / SD Card On Android

Android OS has had a rather different way of managing storage space. In the initial devices, the internal data storage was really low (imagine a device today with mere 512 MB of storage), and even in those that had bigger capabilities, it was not possible to even move applications (and data) to SD card for efficient utilization of available storage area. This, however, brings to me to my second point, that Android has almost always reinforced external, extended storage area in the form of SD cards. It was quite a way to contest with the main competitor in the smart phone arena, too; Apple’s iPhone has always had much bigger internal memory (8GB was the very basic), but Android managed to keep the cost reduced by embedding a lower capacity flash memory and providing the freedom to expand on it at your will through SD cards.

The pattern has modified as the years have passed, and now a days, most of the Android   gadgets out there carry more than sufficient storage space, some of them even leading off likes 64GB with extended external storage memory of up to 32GB through SD cards. The problem even with these, however, is the point that these gadgets have a bifurcation of memory; 2GB might be assigned as “internal memory”, while the remaining would be available to the user in the form of storage/SD cards partition. The drawback of such an strategy is the point that many applications, such as the present larger games, would not store their information in SD cards, thereby wasting precious internal memory. And when you talk about some of the newer titles from Gameloft, trust , that’s a lot of game data that you’re talking about. It’s for such scenarios that FolderMount comes into play.

Folder Mount Preview 1

FolderMount is an independently-developed app from XDA that allows you to mount internal memory folders to external storage space (sdcard partition) of your Android device, making the system believe that it’s making use of the inner storage space, while putting the real data in the larger partition. In so doing, the app will allow you to keep only the essential APK files for various apps in rather-scarce internal storage area (Internal Memory), whereas the related app/game data would go to the exterior storage space (External Memory), putting you in a winning situation. Since a lot of users don’t mostly utilize all the exterior storage space, this would be an ideal solution, especially if you have an Android operating system system that follows this distinction or comes with low internal memory.

Officially supported features of FolderMount include:

    • Root is an absolute MUST. No root, no access to app.
    • Mount internal SD card folders to external SD folders.
    • Move content from internal to external when a pair is added. (Dialog prompt)
    • Support for Android 2.3 – 4.2.2.
    • Holo-themed throughout and an intuitive GUI design.
    • It will check SDCARD mount status and remount if necessary.

The app is still in early beta, so expect some bugs. The designer guarantees ongoing development and following improvements, so keep on the search. For download link and specialized information, please head on the XDA Designers community line below.
