The updated Gmail app now offers enhanced notifications, let you to enable alerts for all the messages, or only for important messages or for none at all. You can configure the notification options for each Gmail account from with in the app settings. But remember that the updated notifications work only with the new inbox.
The renewed Gmail inbox allows you to file your messages into the following mailbox groups or categories: 1. Primary, 2. Social, 3. Promotions, 4. Updates and Forums.
The basic aim behind the categorized inbox is to give you an easy and far better control of your inbox, now you can configure the notifications options to decide which types of messages you want to deal with. Even though Googleâs brilliant algorithms sends the incoming mails to the pre defined categories automatically, But you can also create your own with customized rules from the beginning.

The messages in the Primary category are listed always first. You can access the new categories by opening the left hand pane and then accessing the categories in the menu. Another cool feature is that you can move your messages from one category to another.
To use this new inbox via the iOS app on your mobile, you should first enable & setup it on the web. Remember that if you disable the new tabbed interface in your Gmail, your Priority Inbox will also turns off. You can enable it again from the settings, then choosing inbox, then clicking on inbox type and then setting options for your Priority Inbox.
